Understanding the Context
To the left of this chapel is the headstone for James Murphy, son of the pioneer family that founded the City of Sunnyvale and one of the first students to attend Santa Clara College. Today Mission Santa Clara continues to serve as Santa Clara University’s student chapel and its image has become the icon for the local county, city, and university bearing its name. On , a fire originating in the old Mission Church swept rapidly across campus and burned many buildings beyond restorations. It was ignited by faulty wiring and broke out in the north tower that had been added to the church in the 1860’s.
